If a tyre identification is given in the form 185/60 R14, you can learn much about the size of the tyres. There is a value for the tyre width, which is shown as the first number. The corresponding unit is millimeters, so 185/60 R14 tyres are 185 mm wide. In reality, the measure may differ a little, because fault tolerances are allowed in the production - therefore tyre widths are given in increments of 10. In this case, the next wider tyres thus would have the identification number 195/60 R14.
The tyre width is followed by the tyre tread. To get a better idea ofwhat is meant by this: The tread represents the percentage ratio of height to width of the tyres. Here the flank height is 60 percent of 185 mm, which is 111 mm. The tyre tread is given in 5 percent increments. The third number is the tyre inner diameter in inches. Often it is also associated with the rim size for this tyre, which is also correct.
