Tyre size

When purchasing tyres, not just the right look is important, but also right tyre size. Vehicle and tyre size are matched constructionally exactly. Only thus the manufacturer can guarantee unrestricted safety and functionality for all technically relevant areas (transmission, driving stability, load management and damping). Therefore, there are clearly prescribed tyre sizes for each vehicle. But how do I find out the correct tyre size for my car? There are basically two approaches:

Determining The Correct Tyre Size

The first and most secure version is the comparison with the currently mounted tyre size on your car. The - in this way - determined dimension you can therefore remount without worries. But it is important to ensure the correct type of tyre to avoid dangers, for example by driving summer tyres in the winter.

Search By Registration Number

On mytyres.co.uk you have another possibility to determine the tyre size: Just enter your vehicle registration number and we will find the correct tyres for your vehicle. The sidewall of your tyre has a - at first glance complicated-looking - code. You can find here in a row tyre width, the profile ratio, the construction, the rim diameter, the load index and speed rating. But what does these parameters mean, that are given in millimeters, inch and percent? We explain it with an example: 195/55 R17 91Y. Tyre identification Explained The first variable determines the tyre width in millimeters. In this case our tyre is 195 mm wide. The number after the slash refers to the ratio of the tyre height to the width in percent. Here the height of the tyre is 55 percent of the width, therefore 107,25 mm. This is followed by a letter, which defines the type of tyre.

Typically this is a "R", which stands for radial and means that the casing cords are disposed radially. The second possible construction would be diagonal, but cross-ply tyres are only rarely produced. The next number indicates the tyre diameter. This size is measured in inches - in this example 17 inches. Now you know what size your wheels should have. The tyre size is followed by two specifications, which provide information on the speed limit and the maximum load capacity of the tyre. Here the 91 is the load index, that represents a maximum load of 615 kg per tyre, and the speed rating V stands for for a maximum speed of 240 km/h (150 mph). Now you know both how to find your tyre size and what the individual information exactly mean.
