Fans of the original VW Scirocco - which had existed as a 2+2 seater from 1974 to 1992 - had to wait 16 years for the most recent reissue of this sports coupé in 2008. The first generation originated from the firm Karmann, who were aiming to develop a car similar to the Karmann Ghia coupé; the model they created supplied between 50 and 110 HP and was produced more than 500,000 times by 1981.
The Scirocco II was around for eleven years, until 1992. Unfortunately, the model was no longer selling particularly well, not even after the introduction of the 139 HP Scirocco 16V. The main reasons were the increased price and the somewhat sub-par design, which pushed many potential customers to turn to the Audi coupé instead. Fast forward to 2008, and the revival was on. Powerful (up to 28 HP) engines, dual clutch transmission systems and attractive equipment lines were all to contribute to the Scirocco III's success; the GTS, for example, is fitted with impressive 18-inch alloy VW Scirocco rims with black paint.
