ATS rims are among the most recognisable of all the light alloy options. The German firm, which boasts prodution plants both at home in Germany and abroad, was founded in 1969 and has been part of the Uniwheels group since 2008. In the 40 years between these two events, ATS made a name for itself in rim manufacturing using the low-pressure casting method. While the first wheels were made using sand casting, subsequent manufacturing processes allowed for much-improved flexibility with regards to shape, resulting in the firm being selected as by Porsche in 1971 to supply the original equipment for its sports models.
Technological Pioneer
A number of the ATS rims introduced at the beginning of the 1970s can still be purchased today, albeit as classics rather than technological trailblazers. These include the diamond-black CUP, a one-time tuners' favourite, whose highly polished design was an eye-catcher of its time (owners of the cult classic Beetle or the first VW Golf Generation still rely firmly on these rims today). Production of magnesium wheels began in the 1990s, long after ATS had established itself as a pioneer in the manufacturing of alloy wheels for HGVs using the low-pressure casting method.
