When it comes to choosing safe winter tyres, drivers of powerful SUVs are recommended to be wary of false economy - such as in cases where the car manufacturer has approved a particular kind of tyre. The Michelin Latitude Alpin HP has approval for the Porsche Cayenne, Mercedes GL, ML und R-Klasse, Volkswagen Touareg and the BMW X3 / X5 and is offered in two different sizes: 255/55 R18 for up to 240 km/h (149 mph) or 265/55 R19 for a maximum of 210 km/h (130 mph). In order that steering response and directional stability are maintained at these speeds, the tyres contain reinforced tread blocks for lower deformation and better roadholding capabilities.
The EU tyre label assigns both sizes a C for rolling resistance, which corresponds to a noise level of 74 dB. High cornering stability was a priority for the manufacturer during development and is achieved through rounded shoulders with a high sipe density. Tested in German magazine "Auto Motor Sport" in size 255/55 R18 H in 2006, the tyre was praised for its good suspension properties and resultant high driving comfort.
