The Volkswagen T3 is a transporter made by Volkswagen where the number 3 denotes the third generation. It was built from 1979 till 1992. It had rear wheel drive and an air cooled engine in the rear - afterwards both of these were no longer available. Instead the Volkswagen models were fitted with water-cooled engines and the Transporter with front wheel drive. With the T3 the Volkswagen Transporter, had for the first time a double wishbone and a rack and pinion steering. It was larger than its predecessor and available in more versions: as a flatbed truck,a delivery van, a bus for up to nine persons, a station wagon and with a double cabin for up to six persons. Initially there was a choice between two petrol engines with 50 or 70 bhp. Later more engines followed, including a water-cooled horizontally opposed engine with 122 bhp that was introduced in 1985. The Volkswagen T3 was also very popular for private use. Starting 1985 Volkswagen sold the Multivan with sleeping accommodation. The size of the bed was 1.88 x 160 m and a folding table, wooden floor and there were even curtains. The manufacturer had even thought of the refrigerator. The Westfalia Joker with tilting roof and an additional bed of 1.94 x 1.16 m was also very popular - it cost about 4,300 DM more. The T3 star was a special model with lowered suspension, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors and aluminium rims on which Volkswagen T3 tyres with the dimensions 205/70 R14 were mounted.
