In
1997 the
Mercedes-Benz A-Class came on the market as the manufacturer's first front-wheel drive small car. As early as
1991 there were prototypes of the A- Class - also one electrically driven, however, only the versions with internal combustion engines were introduced. The A-Class
was special in several respects: The engine is inclined above the two drive shafts.
This became necessary so that in spite of the short bonnet (which came into being because of the large interior volume) the safety of the occupants was ensured. In addition the
Mercedes A-Class has a sandwich floor which was designed as part of the safety concept. The battery, the exhaust system and tank are to be found in it. In today's E-cell model with electrical propulsion the batteries are placed there. As a result of the special floor all other components have a higher center of gravity - this was the reason for the result of the legendary Elk test in which the A-Class simply keeled over in 1997.
Mercedes had to react and fixed the problem by using, among other things, ESP - a novelty in this vehicle class. Not even good
Mercedes A-Class tyres , that normally contribute to driving stability, can help in cases like this. In addition, saving fuel, short stopping distances or low rolling noise are all characteristics of a high-quality Mercedes A-Class tyre. Such tyres can be brought in the
